Dear Toastmasters and Friends,
Welcome to District 87’s Semi-Annual Conference in Brunei Darussalam.
I’m very honoured to host a District Conference in Brunei as this is quite a rare opportunity for many. Brunei (Area K6) being part of the huge geographical region (East
Malaysia and Indonesia) shows the diversity in culture and race in the quest for excellence in self-development and confidence.
Hence, having your presence in the Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures gives more meaning to The Brunei Conference and making it a success. With this, I would like to give my deepest gratitude to every single one of you, who invested the time, the effort and the initiative to be here with us.
In Kuching May last year, I pitched for Brunei Darussalam to host the semi-annual conference and ever since the request was granted by the District, I had a surreal feeling, packaged with excitement and fears. Today, the Semi-Annual Conference is a reality and it truly feels like home because in Toastmasters, we are one big family regardless of location.
Though Bandar Seri Begawan is a small city within District 87, we have a very united community in the Toastmasters journey. The event also helps to increase the awareness of Toastmasters in Brunei and in hope that those residing in Brunei will get a clearer picture what Toastmasters is all about and it’s not just related to public speaking only.
Hence the theme “Be the Difference” has many emphasis on the growth of our Toastmasters members who have grown into better communicators and leaders. From their growth, they are able to be the difference and empower others to follow suit. Toastmasters is a never ending journey indeed.
We are delighted to the to have prominent speakers with us in the Brunei Conference 2016 including Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, World Champion of Public Speaking 2014, Darren Tay, this year’s World Champion of Public Speaking, Mohammed Murah, Past International President 2014-2015, Soon Loo, CEO of Darussalam Enterprise (DARe), Stuart Lee, a certified trainer and not forgetting our two Mandarin speakers, Hui Peng Liw and Li Ming Lu. With a variety of subjects, the delegates will benefit from the educational session and learn a thing or two to take back from this conference.
I would like to extend my gratitude towards the working committee who have been instrumental in making this event a success and make everyone feel like home.
Once again, your presence have made a difference and let’s hope the journey continues.
Don’t forget to visit the cultural places while you’re in Brunei.
